President Lee Myung-bak met with Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Berrocal, President of the Republic of Panama, on October 20 at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul for summit talks.

At the summit, the two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties in a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, resources and infrastructure cooperation.

President Lee expressed his satisfaction with Korea-Panama ties and bilateral cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962. Lee added that President Martinelli's state visit, the first official visit from a Panamanian leader, will help create momentum for further ties between the two nations.

President Martinelli said that he hopes for more Korean enterprises and involvement in Panama's resources and infrastructure sectors, and showed a strong interest in Korea’s experience of economic development.

President Lee urged the Panamanian government to provide active support for Korean firms so that they can take part in Panama's national projects, including the Panama Canal expansion project, along with subway, rail, and dam construction projects and infrastructure expansion.

President Martinelli said that Panama will revise laws for mining development projects so that overseas firms can more easily participate in Panama's mining industry.

Meanwhile, President Lee said the Korean government will help Panama build its own e-government system, and use Korea's Knowledge Sharing Program to communicate development experiences.

President Lee expressed his thanks for the Panamanian government's support and cooperation in Korea's efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, and for President Berrocal’s pledge to cooperate in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Lee and Martinelli also exchanged opinions on global issues such as climate change and the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit, and agreed on the need to expand cooperation in the Central American Integration System (SICA) and other regional organizations.

The two leaders also attended the official signing of a tax avoidance agreement between the two countries.
