Samsung Global Scholarship Program (in short: Samsung GSP or GSP) is a talent program of the Korea-based Samsung conglomerate's flagship subsidiary, Samsung Electronics(SEC). Focusing on the goal of having talented personnel with strong business skills, leadership potential and career aspirations, Samsung Electronics recognized the compelling need for high-quality leaders, hence the Global Scholarship Program was created to nurture a very selectively compiled group of individuals, who later in the long run might become leaders ("Future Global Leaders") of the various Samsung Electronics subsidiaries around the world, replacing the current Korean-national management layer (what is presently the usual practice at the chaebol).
The program selects participants who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential and provides them with unique opportunities for further professional development. The program also provides young leaders with a unique international network through which they can share ideas, learn from established leaders, work collaboratively and address global challenges. By exposing participants to the complex issues and opportunities arising from an increasingly interdependent global economy, the program aims to expand perspectives and enhance skills critical for leadership in a changing world.

G-20 Seoul Summit: My Expectation as an Indian Student in Korea

US President Obama discussing some Important issues with Korean President Lee Myung Bak

The G-20 leaders meeting in Seoul next month will be  hosted by  President Lee Myung Bak. Seoul will be the center of attraction for the World.Personally too, I am feeling very proud  being a foreign student  in Korea on this great  ocasion.

Being an Indian Student studying in Korea with the support of Korean Government, I see this Summit as a good  opportunity for strengthening  and betterment  of  Indo-Korean Economic Partnership in the Asian Region which I believe will further play an important role in bringing India-Korea closer in Education and Culture Diplomacy .G-20 comprise of 19 countries+ European Union  which are the most influential countries in terms of Economy  and are among the members of the United Nations too.If we  look at  these  countries in terms of their  GNP(Gross National Product) across the Globe  the G-20 economies comprise 85%of World Trade and two-thirds of the World Population .Like other Countries, India and Korea  are also expected to
gain more ground in the G-20 as their economic output has been remarkable  over the past decades compared to the advanced countries suffering  global financial crisis up to some extent.

US President Obama discussing some Important issues with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

As far as we know that  South Korea being the most wired country in the world is seeking some offshore manufacturing bases in India being  an epicenter of software development as India is home to a plethora of low-cost, reliable IT production facilities.Apart from this  Both India and South Korea have good relations with the United States and  with the latest agreement "Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)"which is likely to wrap up almost three years and 12 rounds of negotiations to bring to fruition South Korea's first economic agreement with a BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) nation.South Korea and India are co-operating each other economically  in this  way.
Moreover  Korea, known as the first Asian Tiger to successfully develop its economy  is having many similarities too with these BRICs.On the Other side The CEPA signed recently between India and Korea  also is a   window of opportunity  for India  as it has sought India  into the Northeast Asian economy. In that perspective G-20 Seoul Summit  will be a milestone for strengthening the bilateral relation of the two countries in a broader sense.

Korea ranked first in broadband leadership

According to the "2010 Annual Broadband Study" by Oxford University, Korea has the highest level of broadband leadership among the 72 countries surveyed. This is the second year Korea has claimed first place.

The researchers calculated the broadband leadership scores of each country based on their Broadband Quality Score (BQS) and broadband penetration at the household level. The evaluations of the global broadband statistics service company Point Topic and the broadband connection analysis website Speedtest.net were also considered in the researcher’s scores.

Korea topped on the list with a total score of 157 points, with nearly 100% of households in Korea having access to broadband, and a BQS of 81. Hong Kong and Japan were ranked second and third for broadband leadership.

Average download throughput in Korea was 33.5 Mbps, an increase of 55% from 2009, and the average upload throughput was 17 Mbps, an increase of 430%.

Moreover, the study said fourteen countries, including Japan, Sweden, Bulgaria, Finland and Korea, are prepared for the "internet applications of tomorrow," including high definition internet TV and high speed digital devices.

Seoul was the highest ranked of 239 cities worldwide, with a BQS of 97 out of 100 points.

Sponsored by Cisco Systems, the Saïd Business School at Oxford University and Spain's University of Oviedo have been evaluating global broadband quality since 2008.

President Lee Myung-bak met with Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Berrocal, President of the Republic of Panama, on October 20 at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul for summit talks.

At the summit, the two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties in a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, resources and infrastructure cooperation.

President Lee expressed his satisfaction with Korea-Panama ties and bilateral cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962. Lee added that President Martinelli's state visit, the first official visit from a Panamanian leader, will help create momentum for further ties between the two nations.

President Martinelli said that he hopes for more Korean enterprises and involvement in Panama's resources and infrastructure sectors, and showed a strong interest in Korea’s experience of economic development.

President Lee urged the Panamanian government to provide active support for Korean firms so that they can take part in Panama's national projects, including the Panama Canal expansion project, along with subway, rail, and dam construction projects and infrastructure expansion.

President Martinelli said that Panama will revise laws for mining development projects so that overseas firms can more easily participate in Panama's mining industry.

Meanwhile, President Lee said the Korean government will help Panama build its own e-government system, and use Korea's Knowledge Sharing Program to communicate development experiences.

President Lee expressed his thanks for the Panamanian government's support and cooperation in Korea's efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, and for President Berrocal’s pledge to cooperate in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Lee and Martinelli also exchanged opinions on global issues such as climate change and the upcoming G20 Seoul Summit, and agreed on the need to expand cooperation in the Central American Integration System (SICA) and other regional organizations.

The two leaders also attended the official signing of a tax avoidance agreement between the two countries.

Joseon nature paintings on display at Kansong Art Museum

The Kansong Art Museum opened its doors to the public for its biannual exhibition on Sunday, October 17, for an exhibition of paintings of flowers, animals, and birds.  The museum will remain open for two weeks, until Oct. 31.

Nestled in a quiet residential area in Seongbuk-dong, the Kansong Museum is one of the most unique and oldest museums in Korea.  It opens only for two weeks in May and two weeks in October each year, during which time hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the colonial-era building to catch a glimpse of some of Korea’s most rare and treasured artworks.

The museum was founded by Jeon Hyeong-pil in 1939 to house his growing collection of treasures.  Motivated by the urge to keep important works of art in Korea during the colonial period, much of Jeon’s family fortune went towards collecting masterpieces of painting, sculpture, calligraphy, printmaking, and ceramic work.
Some the museum’s more famous pieces include Shin Yun-bok’s “Portrait of a Beauty (Miindo)” and National Treasure 68, a Goryeo celadon vase inlaid with cranes.  The only surviving original copy of King Sejong’s "Hunminjeongeum (proper sounds to teach people)" that remains in South Korea today is also housed at the museum.
The grounds of the museum hold as many delights as the building itself, with a variety of stone statues and pagodas dating from as far back as the Goryeo period.  There is also a small menagerie of animals, including white peafowl, and the charming gardens help set off the white stucco of the colonial building.

The collection on display to the public changes seasonally.  This fall, the exhibit focuses on paintings of flora and fauna, while past exhibitions have showcased landscape paintings, calligraphy, and celadon.  Other exhibitions have focused on individual artists and their works, including Shin Yun-bok.

The current exhibition is an exciting mix of the elegant and the charming.  Kim Hong-do’s graceful “Ha Hwa Cheong Jeong (Lotus flower and dragonflies)” can be found in the upstairs gallery, while a tiger scroll by Kim Hong-re prowls downstairs.  Meanwhile, several of Joseon-era painter Byeon Sang-byeok’s beloved cats cavort under chrysanthemum flowers in “Guk Jeong Chu Myo.”
The exhibition also includes a number of pieces attributed to one of Korea’s most famous female artists, Shin Saimdang.  Featured on the 50,000 won note, Shin was famous even during her lifetime for her sensitive paintings, many of which depict flowers and animals. Shin remains a rare example of a publicly-hailed female artist of the Joseon era, and her works of painting and calligraphy continue to be admired today.

The Kansong Museum is located on Seongbukdong-gil, near Hansong University Station (subway line 4).  Visitors are welcome daily between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the run of the exhibition, and admission is free.

India, South Korea sign Social Security Agreement

India Tuesday signed a Social Security Agreement with South Korea, a step that would "enhance movement of professionals between the two countries and strengthen bilateral trade and investment".
"The Social Security Agreement between the Republic of Korea and India was signed by Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and Minister for Trade of the Republic of Korea Kim Jong-hoon in Seoul Tuesday," said a government release.
The overseas Indian affairs ministry said a number of Indians are working in South Korea, most of whom are working professionals or self-employed.
"There is a huge potential for employment of Indian professionals and workers in the Republic of Korea owing to a large labour supply gap in the market. The Social Security Agreement with the Republic of Korea would enhance movement of professionals between the two countries and strengthen the tradeand investment between the two countries," said the release.
India is likely to become a major source of migrant professionals due to its vast reservoir of technically qualified manpower in sectors like information technology, engineering, health, and finance and management, it said.
"Most of the developed countries have an umbrella social security systemmandated by law. It is usually funded through mandatory contribution from all working people and their employers (in a prescribed ratio) in order to provide multiple benefits like old age pension, disability insurance, health insuranceand unemployment insurance.
"Social security agreements address issues such as non-export of social security benefit, loss of contribution due to less than prescribed minimum contribution period, deprivation of benefit in the case of self-employed people on relocation, and loss of competitive edge to the Indian companies while bidding due to high rate of social security tax," the ministry said.
Negotiations between India and Korea were held in New Delhi in December last year.
Some of the benefits to Indian nationals working in South Korea after the agreement:
-For short term contract up to five years, no social security contribution would need to be paid under theKorean law by the detached workers - provided they continue to make social security payment in India.
-The above benefits shall be available even when the Indian company sends its employees to the Republic of Korea from a third country.
-Indian workers shall be entitled to the export of the social security benefit if they relocate to India or a third country after the completion of their service in the Republic of Korea.
-The self-employed Indians in the Republic of Korea would also be entitled to export of social security benefit on their relocation to India, or a third country.

Korean cars to carry international leaders for G20 Seoul Summit

When they visit Seoul for next month's G20 Seoul Summit, leaders will ride in Equus limousines manufactured by Hyundai-Kia Motors.
The car is equipped with a bullet-proof security system and an automatic break alert system, with emergency lights that turn on automatically if the breaks are activated abruptly.
"By providing the G20 leaders with the Equus as an official vehicle for G20 Seoul Summit, we hope to establish a high-end image for the Korean vehicle market and other Korean products,” said Hyundai’s PR staff.
The spouses of heads of state will travel in Germany's new Audi A8 during the summit. The vehicle was imported for the occasion, and has not been released in Korea. It is made of strong, lightweight aluminum, and equipped with automatic distance control between cars.

Additionally, it has a special thermal detector that can sense humans, animals and road obstacles within a 300 meter radius, increasing the safety of night driving.

"Audi has been used as an official vehicle many times in past years. It is a great opportunity to increase our brand awareness and prestige,” said Trevor Hill, Managing Director of Audi Korea.
BMW and Chrysler will also act as sponsors for the summit, which will require a total of 240 official vehicles to transport G20 leaders.
